Rendered (Almost) Speechless! (Nov 11, 2015)
Let’s see – Cocos is beautiful!
The sky is antique pink in the morning, the lagoon is turquoise, the water is deliciously warm, the visibility is unreal, the coral is gorgeous, the reef fish are plentiful, the colours of the reef zing, the species of coral is diverse, the islands are perfect, the coconut palms are dense, the beaches are out of this world, the sky is antique pink or deep red at sunset and the starry sky twinkled…
With a scheduled day for R & R, for which we are most grateful to Simon, the Whale Song team had a fabulous day in and on the lagoon. Dale got to take a long beach and island walk, Curt got to play and film with his water landing quad-copter, Sam got to kite-surf from a tiny island across the lagoon, Resty got to rest watching movies and yours truly went swimming and snorkelling for most of the day! Sheer bliss! I did the Rip twice spending a couple of hours in the water, then swam with three bottlenose dolphins and then visited another coral garden. My hair will go mouldy! Who cares!
Taking Storm over to Home Island, all the crew enjoyed the local Malay Banquet prepared every Wednesday. The food was delicious, 11 dishes and lots of desserts too! A group of 17 lagoon swimmers swelled the numbers to around 35. On Saturday, 72 entrants will swim in the annual Lagoon Swim, from the jetty on Home Island across the lagoon to the jetty at West Island, a distance of 8km. The wind will be light, around 7 knots, which bodes well for their ease of success. Before the meal, we were enthralled during our wander around Home Island, particularly noting the pleasant paving, nice street layout, casual beachside homes, the abundance of new and old trailer boats and the very relaxed, slow-pace-of-life, the golf-buggy style transport and the friendly attitude of the local Malays. The Garden of Eden, along the foreshore was filled with historical details as well as a being a beautiful, tropical jungle garden. The evening was lovely and was a perfect end, to a perfect day.
What a beautiful chance to get up close and personal with the lagoon. I am still grinning from ear-to-ear with my lagoon experience. Hey, how did I get to the bottom of the page? See, almost, was the correct qualification!
