Ever present on deck with us, Skipper is as keen as mustard to find whales and dolphins. He often spots them first and rightly takes his place on the data sheet, under the category “Sighted By”! Go Skipper, keep it!

Finishing a busy day observing whales with sunset at sea, is my favourite aspect of life on the ocean. The colours are intense, the clouds enhance or sometimes ruin the daily event but either way, it’s a waiting game. Watching and waiting as the sun, an orange ball appears to drop towards the horizon. And […]
With great panache, this adult female humpback whale leapt out of the water! Like a mother bear she was protecting her newborn calf from a pesky and annoying shark. With an almighty whoosh, she breached several times, letting that shark know that she was not having a bar of that activity! This humpback whale won-just […]
This adult humpback whale repeatedly exhaled just beneath the water surface blowing bubbles in the Indian Ocean bath! Beautiful, white frothy patterns occurred with each surfacing. Perhaps the bubbles felt nice on the skin behind the blowholes.
In 1990, Curt and Mich began humpback whale research based on Enderby Island in the Dampier Archipelago, northwest Australia. What was the northern destination for this population? Aug 07, 2014 As we raised the anchor at 6 am we moved from Hull Bank and continued collecting photo-id’s on all encountered whales in Camden Sound. Pretty soon, before 10 am in fact, we had another 20 pods on the computer datasheet and had taken another several hundred photos, before specifically following particular ones. […]
Aug 06, 2014 The milky turquoise water of Camden Sound is bordered to the east by mainland Australia from Raft Point north including Hall Point and Wilson Point towards to Needle Rock and Kannamatju Island. The northern boundary of Camden Sound comprises Augustus Island, the Heywood Islands and the Champagny Islands. It is a stunning […]
Aug 05, 2014 The rusty red cliffs of Hall Point glowed under the warm rising sun. As the team stirred with plates of warm raisin toast, bowls of museli and mugs of steaming coffee the gear was prepared for another day of filming. Moving slowly northwards along the rugged coastline towards Wilson Point, we saw […]
