Hull Bank Hoorahs

Aug 07, 2014

As we raised the anchor at 6 am we moved from Hull Bank and continued collecting photo-id’s on all encountered whales in Camden Sound.  Pretty soon, before 10 am in fact, we had another 20 pods on the computer datasheet and had taken another several hundred photos, before specifically following particular ones.

Welcome to our office between the two blues!  Well actually today, our office was between the green and the blue.  A bright deep blue sky reached down to hold an aqua sea at bay.  The whales were extremely easy to see as the morning wind eased and the white caps reduced.  Large brown chocolate whales surged at the surface and arched through the milky green sea.  I will never forget the first time we saw humpback whales here in Camden Sound.  The zinging palette of the land, sea and sky is indelibly etched in my memory forever.  The colour swatch I love – among these hues, is the unusual and most unlikely possibility.  Giant chocolate whales swimming in the pale, mint water appear unlikely but are somehow an appropriate description.  We see humpback whales in light green water, bright blue water, deep green water and indigo water… wow what a treat!  Today we were stuck in the green part of the colour wheel!

With a huge whoosh, the whale peduncle-slapped towards another whale.

Back again at Wilson Point we anchored, ready to enjoy Resty’s delicious evening meal.  After taming the tigers in our tanks the computers in the main salon buzzed and hard-drives whirred, while the film crew prepared for the next busy day.

Happiness is… chocolate whales!  Ah, I will dream of brown whales and green water!
