With great splashing and exuberant sounds, some humpback whales display a behaviour called an Underwater Blow. They exhale in the water before surfacing which creates noisy and showy splashes.
Releasing air just beneath the surface makes huge white splashes!
With each surfacing this whale exhaled before fully coming out of the water. This individual whale was using this behaviour within a competitive pod, was this a way to “threaten” another male or was it just fun?
Water everywhere! Blowing bubbles in the bath!
Even on the roll, this whale kept making underwater blows!
This cow of this cow/calf pair just resting beside our drifting vessel, also did a little underwater blow, with a small resulting splash.
With only a few millimetres of water covering the whales dorsal surface, another small underwater blow was made by this humpback whale.
