Sunfish Predation Observations

While surveying for whales and dolphins the CWR Team often finds other marine critters along the trackline. One day at Scott Reef we observed a tiger shark predating on a huge ocean sunfish. Sighting the sunfish twice on our survey track that day, we observed the slow demise of this beautiful fish by another beautiful fish. Our observation notes and field photographs have been effectively used by Marianne Nyegaard and here is her paper “Tiger shark predation of large ocean sunfishes (Family Molidae) – two Australian observations.”

This is nature in the raw.
