Since 1990, Curt and I (Mich) have been studying humpback whales in north-western Australia.
Based on a desert island in the Pilbara and building a sailing catamaran for exploring the remote Kimberley, a variety of research techniques have been employed.
The tools of our trade have included cameras for individual photo-ID, using a crossbow & arrow or a Dan Inject Rifle for collecting skin biopsy samples and recently deploying satellite telemetry devices onto the backs of cetaceans using RPAs (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) or drones.
Despite the multiple vessels and varying techniques and equipment, the primary aim of our CWR research has remained focused on documenting humpback whale critical habitats while the whales migrate north or south during their breeding season. On our WAVES (Whale Song Antarctic Voyage for Ecosystem Studies) expedition, the CWR Team used satellite tags to examine feeding behaviour during the summer polar feeding season.
Thanks to these enigmatic, acrobatic and wonderful humpback whales for such an amazing research ride!
