Unique black/white markings on the underside of the of this whale include scars in the form of rings.  Barnacles attaching and then detaching leave these marks which become individual identifying features.

This humpback whale has unusual black pigmentation in the crease, or “armpit” where the pectoral fin joins the body.  Again, should all whales wave their pectoral fins consistently, these patterns could be used as individual markings.
