What a treat to see the next generation of humpback whales!  Little calves, born at 5 m long and weighing 1.5 tonnes surge and bob through the water next to mum as they make their way through each day.  Around the clock, in daylight and under starlight, calves learn new behaviours to develop muscle strength for the long journey to the Antarctic, as well, they are mastering the art of feeding and just learning about being a humpback whale calf.  In the process of all this growing and development, safe-guarding these little ‘dill pickles’ is paramount for the protective cows.  Tenderness between a cow and calf is beautiful to witness while they swim very close, literally snuggling up to each other!
