Kimberley Expedition Image Diary

Sep 05, 2014

Back in the beautiful green water of the Kimberley again, we were thrilled to continue humpback whale photo-identification research which we began in 1990 in WA.  Each humpback whale has unique black and white markings on the underside of their tail flukes – just like our fingerprints.  Note the very identifiable white flukes and those two little black spots on the lower part of the left fluke.  With these photographic images, case histories of individual whales unfold.  Residence time in particular regions and also usage of particular locations can be understood.  Our WA catalogue which contains over 6000 individual humpback whales, is an unique photographic archival record of where whales have been doing what, along the west coast.
