Cetacean Season 2015

Ninety East Ridge (Nov 17, 2015)

Squid dominate deep water and are sought by many deep-water dwelling cetacean species such as Risso’s dolphins and Cuvier’s beaked whales. Evidence of squid in this area, are a few blotches of black “processed” squid ink on our foredeck, the calling card from at least one mast-inhabiting bird, during last night. Well, we know the squid are here and we have heard sperm whales and dolphins at night (known squid eaters) and if birds are eating them too – well, the squid don’t have a hope! Now, to see some of these wonderful squid consumers!

Blue Water and Blue Sky. Perfect vista.

End of Day 3. What will we hear tonight? During the night we have more detections, most likely due to the vertical migration of prey bringing the predators to the surface. What will be on the Deep Sea News tonight?

Still thoroughly enjoying the mid-ocean blue hues – now to find some blue whales! It can’t be too easy – we have to work for this!
