Cable Beach Caper

Aug 01, 2014

Thump, thump, thump was my alarm clock this morning before sunrise.  Craning my neck to see outside through our aft window, I could understand why the photographers were out and about!   The sun, promising another beautiful day in paradise, hid behind the primary sand-dunes of Cable Beach.  An orange-glow over the pink dunes and pink alto-cumulus made for spectacular morning viewing.

After a morning of ship’s chores and maintenance Orca was launched and Curt, Skipper and I went into the beach to collect another four crew members for this Kimberley expedition.  With great anticipation Skipper hovered on the bow of Orca, trying to jump off before we got to the shore!  At the correct estimated water depth, Curt gave him the word and splosh into the milky, shallow water of Cable Beach he leapt racing as face as possible to the endless sand before him!  In huge racing circles he roared around between tanned sun-seekers relaxing in deck chairs beside their 4-WD vehicles.  In and out of the water he raced and visited roaming, friendly dogs – how could life be better?

We are on Day One of our expedition into the Kimberley.  With people and gear loaded, we lifted the anchor at 1135 and set off from Cable Beach heading towards Camden Sound.  Yahoo!  We have already seen 300 humpback whales on our journey from Fremantle to Broome and the volume of whales still awaits us!

The day before we left for the Antarctic from Hobart, I feared my soul would burst with anticipation.   Thinking about going to the Kimberley brings out the same emotion.  With huge tides, strong currents and hot temperatures, this land demands ones’ attention.  The scenery is so beautiful and the rewards of travel so great.  I am very excited at the prospect of being in this fantastic place again very soon and grateful that humpback whales come to such an incredible place.

Feeling happy on the humpback highway to Camden Sound,

Mich
