Fluke Fingerprints

Unique identifying marks on the underside of the tail flukes of humpback whales are just like our fingerprints.  These photo-id images are matched within and between seasons to understand migration paths and patterns.

Twisting and rolling continuously, this animal was desperate to shake the gathering sharks, Cobia and sucker fish.

The unique tail flukes of this yearling are on show here.

lowres-1208113291These markings on the fluke underside are very unusual, only a handful of humpback whales in our catalogue have fluke patterns like this animal.

lowres-1639This whale has amazing markings on the topside (dorsal surface) of the tail flukes. Often re-sights are made on subtle markings and careful examination on the computer, but this whale we will recognise in the field.

DSC_2639Flukes!  The red lines on the white fluke, are fresh scratches. Upon healing, these marks will become fine black lines.
