Cetacean Season 2015

Near Ningaloo

Throughout the night the sea calmed and with the midnight sonobuoy launch, the water was glassy, such that all the lights of the 17 vessels offshore from Onslow, were reflected beautifully.  Given this, the bumpy start to the day was surprising.

Large, lumpy waves lifted Whale Song gently for the first part of the day.

As the day progressed the sea calmed again and we re-positioned and re-deployed the towed array, after using the windlass for grappling loggers yesterday.  At 3pm, upon re-commissioning the array, we had dolphins squeals squiggling all over our screens!  Then we saw the splashes and twirls of spinner dolphins and next the blows of four sperm whales, also heard on the acoustics and then a tall blow and the body of a pygmy blue whale to match the calls on the acoustics!!!  Wow!  What a stella afternoon!  I haven’t lost my day job after all!

As soon as the towed array was deployed we had spinner dolphins squealing all around!

Throughout the pink hues of near sundown, Carrie and Skipper continued to look for any interesting critters!

Next, we had an amazing sunset, which went on and on and on with twilight lasting forever!  How beautiful!!  How lucky are we?  Thank you, thank you.

With sunset tones unfolding, we were enveloped in stunning tangerine hues, wow!
