Yampi Sound Soundings

Aug 17, 2014

At 0640 we left our anchorage, next to the lovely island and headed for Yampi Sound.  What will we see today?  This is the question on everyone’s lips each day.  When observing nature and natural behaviour, basically, anything is on the cards!

Into Yampi Sound we wandered and surveyed for animals.  Sure enough, whales were observed and around 4000 photos taken by yours truly…  Volume is not important – we use these images as a record of behaviour.  And not just recording an overactive right finger on the camera shutter!

The wind was strong-ish this morning and made us work hard but eventually after lunch, of yummy chicken noodle soup and Turkish baguettes with salmon and smoked cheese, we were treated to calmer weather.  The green water became greener and the whales variously breached or slept.  We are enjoying recording the daily activities of whales, seeing the similarities and differences.

Up and down the Sound we travelled all day, recording all the whales in the area.  It was really fun to observe all the different types of behaviour from sleeping though to pectoral fin slapping and spectacular breaching.   We love this work.  It is wonderful, but it is a marathon!

After another wonderful day with whales and another delicious dinner meal from Resty of chicken chop suey and steamed rice we were happy to anchor in beautiful Myridi Bay, a simply gorgeous little creek on the Australian mainland.

So happy with the whales we experienced today!
